Power Yoga

logo

poweryogaHi, I am back.  I was away for the last couple of days and have not been able to scratch my blog itch.  Luckily, I was able to find some really good exerciseclasses.  I spent the last couple of days visiting a friend in New Jersey.  I was able to maintain my regular exercise routine, I received a free “friend pass” at my friends gym on Saturday.  Today it cost me $20 dollars to attended a Power Yoga class at a center near the Jersey Shore.  It was money well spent in my opinion.  I have not been to a power yoga class in a while and boy is it a rigorous workout.  For those of you who do not know, power yoga is based on strength building and flexibility.  Similar to ashtanga yoga but different in the sense that there are no set poses.  I enjoyed the workout immensely.  I will say that I miss the chanting and mediation aspect of my typical Yoga practice.  This Power yoga class was run more like an aerobics class than a yoga class.  No worries, i will be back to my practice tomorrow.

For those that are interested in my colon cleansing experiment, I have good news, I finally received the package.  I will get started tomorrow.  Stay tuned, this should get interesting.

Is stress running your life?

logo

dont_worry_be_happyI have a close friend of mine who lost her job as a sales rep about 4 months ago and has been unable to find a job.  It seems that she is letting the stress completely rule her life.  I have noticed dramatic changes in her over the past couple of months.  For starters she was miserable around the holidays and I also noticed that she has put on at least 10 pounds.  As a nutritionist I am well aware that some people eat to deal with stress and depression.  There are other serious mind and spirit related issues as well.  My friend is so stressedand depressed that she won’t even do anything to snap herself out of it.  I have invited her to my Yoga and Pilate’s classes and invited her out this past weekend for a night on the town.   She declined both invitations.  I had a couple of articles bookmarked in my favorites that I emailed my friend.  I figured I would share them with all of you.  Take a look at the articles below.

My Diet

logo

I received am email this morning from Doris in Connecticut.  Doris asked me what my daily diet consists of.  I thought I would share it with all of you.  Let me start by saying that this diet works for me and may not be right for you.  I recommend you consult a physician or a nutritionist.  First off, it is not my diet, it is just my daily intake.  The one thing I will tell you is that my daily caloric intake is highly regimented and is very consistent.

Breakfast-

I always start my day with a banana smoothie.  Sometimes I will get crazy and mix in other fruits like strawberry, blueberries, or raspberries.  I also add a spoonful of protein powder .

Lunch-

Always a salad with light dressing.  I alternate between chicken and tuna.

Dinner-

My breakfat and lunch routine are set in stone.  I do allow myselg more flexibility at dinner.  I usually will have meat (protein) and a vegetable and a starch.  A typical meal will be a piece pf tilapia, with rice and brocolli.  I do not deprive myslef, I do eat pizza and pasta and chinese food (nothing deep fried though)

I snack on apples, oranges, nuts, carrots, trail mix and other healthy snacks whenever I am hungry,

I never drink soda.  I drink water 90% of the time…

and there you have it……

Jivamukti Yoga

logo

yogaposeJiva what?

Jivamukti yoga is hard to pronounce and even harder to do.  My friend brought me to a Jivamutki yoga class this past weekend and boy was it tough.  I was clueless about this form of yoga, and i consider myself a Yoga expert, but my friend clued me in and I have since done a lot of research on the topic.

If you are not familiar, here is what I learned.  Jivamukti means “liberation while living.”  It is a new type of vinyasa style yoga first developed in the US in 1984.  It incorporates an intense physical work out, and a big dose of yoga spirituality, chanting, meditation, music.  I was told that each class has a unique theme.  I am not exactly sure what the theme of my class was, but I can tell you it was one of the most physically demanding sessions I have ever been through.  It was also one of the most enjoyable, I absolutely love the spiritual side of yoga, and this class really focused on that much more than any other class I have ever attended.  I am hooked, I absolutely love this style, the problem is there are not many classes if any near where I live.  My friend lives in New York City, and there are tons of classes available.  She is asking one of her instructors for referrals for me down here in the Philly suburbs.

Side note, I liked Jivamuki so much that I actually registed the domain name: Jivamukti.info, I have no idea what I am going to do with it, but I am the proud owner of it none the less…

Until next time….

ps.  I am still waiting for my order of Colonix to come in.

Dr. Natura it is

logo

colonixI made my decision, I went with Dr. Natura’s Colonix.  I have received several personal recommendations from people that have had success using the product and I likes the fact that they offer an unconditional money back guarantee.  I must admit that I had sticker shock when I saw the price.  It costs $88 for a month supply.  They recommend taking it for three months.  I am going to go month to month and see how it goes.  I just made the transaction and they say it should take about a week.

I will let you know when I receive it in the mail and when I start taking it.  I am off to the gym before they close at 6:00, I want to get a quick run on the treadmill in.

Colon Cleanser- Trying to choose

logo

Wow, there are a ton of colon cleansing products out there, and I mean a ton!  There are close to 6 million pages on google about the topic.  I have done a lot of research (about 2 hours to be exact) and I have narrowed my selection to three choices:

Dr Natura’s Colonix

Oxy Powder

Almighty Cleanser

I chose these three after evaluating the ingredients, reading reviews and testimonial.  I will be asking several people that are in the know over the next day or so.  In fact, I have some emails that I sent that I am waiting to get word back.  I will be making my selection tomorrow.

I have to go and raid my piggy bank to come up with some money, these products are not cheap, that’s for sure.  The price range is $40-$88 and does not include shipping and handling.

Well it’s 10:00 on Saturday night and I am going to do some crunches now and then hit the hay..

Good night..

Bloating

logo

I often write about how I feel, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and over the last couple of days I have been feeling very bloated and experiencing general stomach problems.  I told a girlfriend of mine and that started a conversation about regularity and constipation (nice, right!)  My friend is also a nutritionist so I really value her opinions and she suggested that I use a “colon cleanser” to “clear me out.”  Sorry, if this is gross to you guys, but it is something we all experience.  Her suggestion lead to me having 2 good ideas, the first one was that I should look into the colon cleansing thing and my second thought was, wow, this would be great to blog about.  So that is what I am doing, I am going to look into all of the options out there and provide a daily diary of how and what is happening as a result of my colon cleansing.  I think I will call it “My Colon Cleansing Experiment.”  If you are interested (gosh, I hope I don’t lose any loyal readers over this) check back daily for the latest.  I promise, I will try my best not to gross you out.

I am off to scoure the Internet for research…

Till next time..

How are you doing with your New Years Resolution?

logo

new-years-resolutionAs I write this we are 2 weeks into the new year.  I am struggling to keep my new years resolution, and I am wondering how all of you are doing.  My resolution is to cut out all carbonated beverages and this has been challenging because I am addicted to Diet Coke.  I was smart because I started weaning myself off in December and then when I cut it out completely on January 1st it wasn’t that bad.  I can tell you that I still crave it, that is why I am writing about it, I am trying to get it out in the open and off my chest.  Okay, I feel better now.

If you are like most Americans then you probably have fitnenn and health goals st the top of your list.  In fact, 4 out of the top 5 resolutions this past year include health related topics:

  • Excercise
  • Fight the bulge
  • Quit Drinking
  • Quit Smoking

If you are reading this and you have slipped and not stayed on course, I want to encourage you to try again.  If your health is important to you, give yourself a second chance.

Raw Diet

logo

A lot of my clients have been asking me about the raw diet or the raw food diet and I wanted to voice my opinion about it in my blog. The raw diet is not new although it is increasing in popularity, especially in yoga circles. Just as the name suggests, it is a diet comprised of eating raw foods, usually fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans. I personally do not subsribe to the raw diet but it can be a great diet if you are able to only eat raw food for 75% of your intake. For me, I live off of high protein foods like fish and chicken, I eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables but no where close to 75%. I will tell you that I have a friend who started eating only raw foods several months ago, and she has lost weight, her skin and hair look great and she says she has more energy than ever. I know that is only one case study so I am interested to hear your comments about the raw food diet. Has it worked for you? Were you able to stay on it?brocoli

Hot Yoga

logo

hot-yoga1Well I just got back home from doing my favorite thing in the world, hot yoga.  Hot yoga, like the name suggests in yoga done in a hot room.  The Yoga center that I practice at keeps their room at a sweltering 99 degrees.  I think I sweat off like 3 pounds today.  I feel exhausted and invigorated all at the same time, my head is tingly and I feel so alive.  I have been doing yoga most of my adult life, and only started hot yoga about a year ago.  What I like best is that the heat increases my flexibility greatly.  In fact there are some poses that I can only do during my hot yoga sessions.  I also love knowing that I am ridding myself of harmful toxins due to the excessive sweating that is taking place.

I do have 2 basic tips if you are going to try hot yoga.

1. Bring your own mat (for obvious reasons)

2. Drink copious amounts of water before and after (again, for obvious reasons)
